The Importance of a Good Business Card

Posted Andy Juhasz Uncategorized

Business cards can be traced back to Europe in the 17th century where they were called “visiting cards”.  The footmen of the royalty would present them to the servants of a host to let them know of their arrival.  They have evolved quite a bit over the last four centuries to what they are today, but are still one of the most important forms of introduction in business.

Technology has played a huge role in the evolution of the business card, with everything from the materials they are printed on, to the design process, and even the information that is put on the cards. There are so many factors to keep in mind when designing a card – the type of paper (or stock) they’re printed on, the creative layout, the typography (the science of lettering), and even the shape.  There are so many options available to help make yours stand out.

It is so easy to get carried away when creating a card. But you need to always remember the function of your business cards, to carry information about your business or organization.  You can get as creative as you want, but be sure to never stray from the important information.  Your name, business name, physical address and phone number are all vital.  However, equally important in today’s day and age are your email address, website, and even social media.

There are websites that offer cheap, or even free cards, but business cards are not a place to skimp. Even with their relatively small size, they are one of the most powerful tools a business owner can have.  A card is often the way a potential customer remembers your business, and with so many business cards changing hands it is so important to stand out and be professional without being too different.  Unless you have design experience, designing your cards on your own is probably not a good idea.  Remember, business cards are often the first impression your business makes.

Once you have your great new cards, be sure to always have a few in your pocket (and your car, your spouse’s car, your gym bag, etc.). You just never know when you’ll meet a potential client or customer.  You’d hate to be on vacation and come across a great lead, and not have a card to hand them.
